Best Blu-Ray Player Guide

August 13, 2009 by Kevin

Are you stuck in the movie medieval days with your DVD player?  If your love film and want to experience movies as they were intended then the Blu-ray is a must have!  Finding the best Blu-ray player can be an uphill struggle, afterall the market is saturated with a few duds.  That’s why our best Blu-ray guide is a must have.

Sony BDP-S350 Blu-Ray Player

Sony BDP-S350You wont believe how much of a stir this Blu-Ray player caused last Christmas.  Everyone needed to buy one and they regularly went out of stock across the UK.  Even though slightly newer models have been released, they don’t compare to the Sony BDP-S350 and it’s many rave reviews.

It comes with everything you need in a Blu-Ray player: HD1080, 24P True Cinema, x.v Colour and Sony’s patented Bravia Sync.  Bogged down by the jargon?  Who cares as all you need to know is that this is one serious player, for a not too serious price.  You can’t really argue against 130 positive customer reviews on Amazon.

sony bdp s360Sony’s newest Blu-Ray player from their flagship range.  Like it’s younger brother above the BDP-S360 is going to remind us why Sony pave the way in visual technology.  Similarly, it comes with everything you need to get watching Blu-Ray with full access to 1080 HD output at 24 fps just like the film makers intended.

You get access to full cinematic quality viewings from the comfort of your home.  With this release Sony have also placed more emphasis on the DB Live service which allows you to access exclusive online features.

Panasonic BD60EB Blu Ray Player

The first in our selection of the best Blu-Ray players thats isn’t made by Sony.  Don’t be fooled though, the Panasonic DB60EB seriously packs a punch that you can’t avoid.  With a similar selection of must-have features that Blu-Ray discs are known for it also comes with Panasonic’s personal touches.

PHL Reference Chroma Plus Technology makes the picture as close to the actual film as possible whilst their P4HD technology recreates pixels in a visually stunning way.  According to Panasonic their selection of Blu-Ray players are favoured by hollywood workers if that makes a difference in your buying decision.

Samsung BD-P1600 Blu-Ray Player

Samsung BD-P1600

Coming in at a slightly cheaper price than any of the above players the Samsung BD-P1600 is a fairly practical entry level player that comes with most of the Blu-Ray features mentioned above.  It definitely doesn’t have the style of the Sony players, or the features of the Panasonic but it most certainly is an excellent budget player.

Perhaps the best new feature with this model is it’s Fast Playback speeds.  No more wasted seconds between inserting the Blu-Ray disc and getting the movie underway.

Sony BDPS360B Profile 2.0 Blu-ray Player with BD Live

August 12, 2009 by Kevin

sony bdp s360Sony’s BDP Blu-ray series is massively popular so we thought it was about time we mentioned their newest, and no doubt their best seller over this forthcoming Christmas, the BDP S360.

Buy at the UK’s Guaranteed Cheapest Price of £125.50

It isn’t a surprise that Blu-ray stores 5 times more detail than a standard DVD allowing you to view movies the way the director intended, however it isn’t often that sound keeps up. With the BDP S360 you get 7.1 channel sound direct to your speaker system, and with the exclusive online content you get by hooking this particular Sony Blu-ray player to BD-Live you have unparalleled viewing.

You obviously get much much better picture quality than conventional TV broadcasts thanks to the BDP S360’s 40 megabits a second record and playback rate. Another contributer to this is its ability to display full HD images at 1920 x 1080 line resolution. Even better, the new Precision Cinema HD Upscale technology will convert the standard-definition signals of your DVDs to the full HD 1080 equivalent, so you get the best out of your complete movie library.

The big thing that Sony love to mention about the BDP S360, and indeed all their Blu-ray players is the ability to watch movies at 24 frames per second. This is the speed they were filmed at, and by matching the playback rate you get excellently crisp and smooth visual effects.

Not content with this Sony have to ’showboat’ even more by adding x.v colour technology which doubles the range of colours that can be reproduced on screen and makes on screen images far more vivid. This is definitely one to be tested, as visual experiences can be truly spectacular and certainly were with the Sony BDP S360.

Sony PSP Go – The Ultimate Review

July 30, 2009 by admin
Filed under Consoles and Video Gaming, Handhelds

Sony PSP GoA couple of things are obviously different.  The Sony PSP Go is quite a bit smaller that the original PSP and the UMD drive has gone (phew!) and fortunately replaced by 16GB worth of inbuilt storage and a card slot.  The Go has snazzy (yet smaller) 3.8 inch screen which slides up to reveal the D-pad, analogue stick and buttons.

Regular PSP users of the past will have cottoned on to the decision to go with storage rather than UMD but we are more interested in the improved online access to rival some of the other portable media devices out there.  A wise decision by Sony me thinks!

There is no improvement in performance, no improvement in screen resolution or size, its actually half and inch smaller, and no improvement in the battery, but without the UMD there will hopefully be a great improvement in game loading times.

Just like other online consoles you can buy the games online with your playstation Network ID and they download straight to your hard drive and for existing PS3 owners there is the added functionality of being able to synch them together. Sony PSP Go Closed

There are some cool new features in the Sony PSP Go however.  The built in Skype application turns the PSP Go in to a free phone any time you have a Wi-Fi connection, which is made easier by the ability to link a headset to it via Bluetooth.  the storage capacity lets you download or upload movies to it just like a PMP but from several reports out there it seems to be a little unpredictable (hopefully sorted before general release).  It can definitely be said that the PSP Go is intended to be a more serious multimedia device that the original version and the functionality has been improved to echo this.

It looks good, and the multimedia device functionality make the Sony PSP Go a fair contender against the iPod Touch but I have to wonder whether they are fighting an up-hill battle. It certainly has much more potential as a gaming device and hopefully the attempt to become and iPod Touch beater hasn’t compromised its functionality as a portable console….after all, thats what we fell in love with the PSP for!

Sony WALKMAN E Series Video MP3 player

July 28, 2009 by admin

Sony WALKMAN E Series MP3 PlayerRecently Sony have announced the pending release of a new entry level video MP3 player called the Sony WALKMAN E Series but how will it compare to the massively popular Sony NWZ-E436FB 4GB Drag and Drop MP4 Video Player?

The new Walkman E series is just 9.3mm thick and is available in red and black. It features a 2-inch QVGA colour LCD screen which offers a crisp, detail-packed view of videos and photos. It is also designed to deliver up to 30 hours of music or 6 hours of video playback on a single charge.

The generously-sized 2-inch QVGA Colour LCD screen offers a crisp, detail-packed view of videos, photos, album art, playlists and other functions.

As you’d expect from WALKMAN®, the E Series is packed with unique Sony sound enhancement features for a more satisfying listening experience.  Sony’s clear audio technology reduced noise leakage between headphones giving you a better stereo experience and a 5 band equaliser comes as standard allowing you to fine tune the sound to your own preferences.

It seems that the Sony WALKMAN E Series is set to offer some detail sound features along with a pretty good battery life of 6 hours.  I wonder if this hopefully cheap MP3 player can bridge the tech gap between some Cowon MP3/MP4 players and the Apple iPod?

Further Details

• Slim, light Digital Media Player in choice of Black or Red
• Clear Stereo and Clear Bass technologies for superb sound quality
• High resolution QVGA 2” Colour LCD screen
• Support for video file format conversion (If users have decoder software, other video formats can be converted)
• Long battery life up to 30 hrs (Music : MP3 128kbps) audio / 6 hrs (Video : MPEG-4 Simple Profile 384kbps) video

Sony DPFV900 Digital Photo Frame

April 2, 2009 by robotics

Sony_photo_frame.jpg

Taking pictures is one of my wife’s great hobbies. She never tries to lose any opportunity to take pictures for posterity. One method she does to highlight the pictures she takes is by making scrapbooks. She’s really good at making really pretty pages and it’s been a source of pride for our family to have scrapbooked albums. But scrapbooking can be so demanding on both effort and time. We currently have a such a backlog of photos that my wife estimates that it will take her another two years just to keep up.

But since we love to show off our photos I think the next best solution would be to use a digital photo frame. Sony released a great digital photo frame, the Sony DPFV900. The Sony DPFV900 is a 9 inch digital photo frame that is absolutely gorgeous. It uses a high contrast 9 inch LCD screen that shows really brilliant colours. The Sony DPFV900 is very easy to use. In fact, you can directly connect it to most digital cameras and memory cards. It even has special features that will help enhance the quality of photos that will be displayed. Operating the Sony DPFV900 is quite simple as it only needs a few button presses to access the things you need. It has an HDMI output that will allow you to hook it up to all High Definition TV. There is also an included remote control to allow you to control how photos are shown or displayed on the frame. Additionally, it even has a Bluetooth function, but you need to buy an optional accessory to make this work.

Sony NWZ – X1000 – Some More PMP News

March 11, 2009 by admin

sonyxserieswalkmanspecced4-thumb.jpg

I’ve blogged about some of the portable media players (PMPs) that are already invading the market. These are really great all in one devices that are perfect for people who are constantly on the move and want to bring as much choice in entertainment with them as possible (count me in as one of these easily bored people who always bring a book, my iPod, my phone, and my Nintendo DS Lite and Playstation Portable whenever I have to leave the house for more than two hours).

Sony may not necessarily be the pioneering manufacturer of PMPs in the market but no one can contest that a Sony branded product is always a sought after piece of electronic equipment. If I’ll buy a PMP I’d surely want a Sony, too. Sony has recently revealed more details about the NWZ – X1000. This new device is actually being branded as a Walkman but since it has video capabilities I think it falls safely under the PMP category.

The NWZ – X1000 will be able to play MP3, WMA, and AAC audio formats at up to 320kbps. With regards to video, it can handle MPEG – 4, H.264, and WMV formats. The OLED screen is limited to just 320 x 240. This is a big mistake for me especially since the native resolution of the screen is 432 x 240. The NWZ – X1000 will also have built in FM radio functions, WiFi capability with 802.11 b/g connectivity, internet browsing with Youtube support and a relatively long 33 hours of battery life when playing music and nine hours for video.

There are still no details given about pricing so watch out for it.

Sony releases new mid level phone with 5MP camera

Sony Ericsson has been producing many mid level mobile phones that are packed with many features you’ll think they’re high end models.

With the Mobile World Congress nearing, different phone companies are now preparing to unveil new models for 2009, and Sony has already given more details about one o f its mid range phones, the Cybershot branded C903.

The Sony Ericsson Cybershot C903 is a slide phone that has a 5 megapixel camera, which has a protective cover. The phone will have dedicated keys for operating the camera. The cool thing about the built in cam is the face detection technology that is present on digital cameras are now included in the phone. It even has a smile shutter. BestPic, which lets you choose from 9 successive shots, is also an available feature.

Video recording comes with image stabilization and there’s also a TV out port for attaching the phone to the TV to view videos and photos. The C903 will have an auto-rotating display on its 2.4 inch screen, and will display at 240 x 320 resolution.

Of course, the phone features are no less impressive. The aGPS means photos can be tagged with the location of where it was taken. It has support for GSM / GPRS / EDGE 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 as well as UMTS / HSPA 900 / 2100. The Sony Ericsson C903 will come in nice colors like Techno White, Glamour Red and Lacquer Black.

No need to worries about having memory problems – the phone has a built in memory of 105 MB and will have a slot for accepting Memory Stick Micro. It has been clocked at 10 hours of talk time on both GPRS and GSM. Standby time is a staggering 400 hours.

There’s still no news on pricing for this nice product.

Sony to release new line of XB cans

February 10, 2009 by robotics

sony_xb_series_headphones.jpg

Sennheiser may be an acknowledged leader in the headphone and earphone industry but count on technology giant Sony to always nip at the heels of any electronics industry leader. Sony has been developing earphone and headphones that could also rival the quality of some of Sennheiser’s earphone and headphone models.

With Sennheiser releasing new models for both its earphone and headphone lines, it should be expected that Sony (http://sony.co.uk) will not be far behind with their own revamped models. In fact, Sony has announced that it will also release five new sets of portable audio models that claim to have the best bass output in the market.

Sony’s XB line (which stands for eXtra Bass), has coopted the slogan “How low can you go?” in order to bring attention to its new earphone and headphone models that supposedly has the lowest bass ever produced for cans. Sony is already saying that the new line will definitely be a hit among hiphop, dubstep and drum ‘n bass fans.

According to sony, the XB line accurately reproduces ultra low frequencies without sacrificing the quality of the midrange vocals and the high frequency sounds. This is most apparent with its flagship MDR – XB700 headphones that feature a very large 50 mm dome type driver.

Sony’s XB700, 500 and 300 are not just great performers but smart lookers as well especially with its lush looking synthetic leader and the humongous ear cushions that reduce sound leakage.

Sony also has the in-ear alternatives with the MDR-XB40EX and MDR-XB20EX that claim to have what Sony calls a “seismic bass” that is made through a direct vibe acoustic design that also limits any kind of sound spillage. The in-ear phones are made from brushed aluminum and it also has a durable flat section cord.

Although no pricing details have been announced yet, expect to see these new Sony headphones and earphones in your favorite retailers next month.

Global crisis affecting gadget prices

January 29, 2009 by robotics

shop.jpg

Bad news for gadget lovers in the UK.

The worldwide economic downturn is taking a turn for the worse and it’s affecting the prices of gadgets all over the world, and the UK has not been spared this unwelcome development.

A month ago, Sony (http://www.sony.co.uk) decided to increase the cost of most of its consumer electronics products by as high as 33 percent. The company reasoned that the currency fluctuations has led them to spike up the prices. But current trends are showing that it almost all Japanese electronics products are going to follow Sony’s business decision and also bump up their respective prices.

The strengthening Japanese yen and a weakening pound has resulted in a price hike. Many Japanese companies are now preparing to change their prices by bumping it up from five to ten percent. Canon has reportedly already done so with most of its products in the UK being increased by ten percent. Nikon has also followed suit by raising UK camera prices by about the same margin a couple of weeks ago.

Sony’s decision to hike up its prices a few days before Christmas was something that did not affect consumers as much because of many retailers who tried to absorb some of the brunt of the price hike as a way of enticing consumers to keep shopping throughout the Christmas season.

But with the new developments, it looks like this is not going to happen again. Already, other Japanese electronics manufacturers, among them Toshiba, Sharp, Panasonic, Pioneer, and Sanyo, are already increasing their prices across the board.

Sony to sell OLED TV in the UK

January 29, 2009 by robotics

sony_xel-1_in_uk.jpg

I blogged about good industrial design yesterday and fortuitously enough, I actually found another well designed electronics product that will become available in the UK.

It was recently announced that what is supposedly the world’s thinnest available OLED TV will now be sold in the UK. This product is the diminutive 11 inch XEL – 1 from Sony (http://www.sony.co.uk).

The very small TV is really for those early adaptors with really, really deep, crisis-proof pockets because the XEL – 1 is going to cost £3,489. This basically means you are paying for £317 per inch. The OLED TV was originally launched in Japan back in 2007 and at that time it was sold for just £850. I don’t understand how the markup could be that large.

But back to the gadget first. The Sony XEL – 1 measures just 3mm thick and has an amazing contrast ratio of 1,000,000 : 1. The screen promises super bright images, vivid colours and a significantly lower power consumption. The XEL – 1 is expected to go on sale this week. Look for it in Sony stores as well as in John Lewis and Currys by March.

According to Sony UK, there is a great interest among consumers for the TV. And as I said above, the interest seems to be around the early adaptors. The company has already announced that it has already received hundreds of pre orders. But I really doubt that the average bloke will be willing to spend £3,489 for a TV with a size that is just larger than a post card.

Sony unveils WiFi equipped Cyber-shot

January 13, 2009 by robotics

sony_cybershot_g3.jpg

Convergence products are still a hot electronic trend last year and this year looks like it won’t be any different. I can see the wisdom in combining the functionality of two or three gadgets in one. You can only have so many pockets on your jeans and not everyone loves to bring a bag just to carry electronic gizmos.

Sony (http://www.sony.co.uk/) has done convergence products before and they continue to do it again with the Cyber-Shot DSC –G3 digital camera. This new camera boasts of being the first camera with a built in web browser.

WiFi equipped cameras are nothing new, many manufacturers have already released them over the last couple of years. But Sony’s new camera is the world’s first with a built in web browser.

The new camera will allow users to connect to the internet using the camera and upload their photos or video in just a single click to such sites as Youtube, Dailymotion, Picasa and other similar sites.

The DSC – G3 will sport 10 megapixels and 4x optical zoom, a 3.5 inch lcd display and an internal storage space of 4 GB – probably the biggest internal storage space in the market today ( with the capacity you won’t need to purchase an external memory stick already). It will also have other advanced camera features that will include intelligent scene recognition and DNLA support along with face detection and smile shutter. No price has yet been set for this new camera that will surely take the consumer world by storm. No release date has also been set as of yet.

PlayStation Home Up And Running

playstation-home-logo.jpg

Finally, the moment has arrived. PlayStation fan boys have been waiting for the release of Home for the longest time now and after the numerous delays that Sony is quite known for, it has finally been released. Rumor of the launch came out sometime on Wednesday last week and naturally, this caused a stir among the plethora of Sony fans. By Thursday, everyone was glued to their consoles, trying to connect to Home.

I was quite lucky, really. I only had to try twice to get in. I do not know if the error was due to my own Internet connection (I highly doubt it, though) or if Home’s servers were simply inundated by the mass of excited gamers like me. I seriously think that it was the latter. And indeed, sometime on Saturday, I was totally unable to log in. The reason? It seems that the high levels of traffic just overwhelmed the servers. I have not tried again today since the first time I did so I have little to share…

My experience was exciting, to say the least. I was able to make my own avatar and roam the world. I think that I am luckier than others – I didn’t have any problems logging in (other than having to try twice) while I heard that some people had problems with their passwords. There were already a lot of people in the world and it was fun interacting with them – we were all like little kids given new toys for Christmas!

Needless to say, I can’t wait to go to Home again. Have to go try it!

There is no denying that Apple has made history with its ubiquitous iPod line of portable mp3 players. Ever since they released the first generation of iPods, people all over the world have been scrambling to get the latest version. Naturally, this gave rise to competition, mp3 players slated to be iPod killers. To date, though, I don’t think that any of them have been able to get one over on Apple. Until now, maybe.

Sony used to be the king of portable music players. Remember the 80s when people carried Walkmans around? The older generation thought that it was stupid, walking around with that small black box and headphones. The iPod changed all that but the Walkman started it all.

Now, Sony has the latest version of the Walkman in the NWZ-S639F. This baby has gone a long way in evolutionary terms. Though it has the same name as its predecessors, the S639F is a whole new product on its own. Visually, it resembles a phone with its sleek metallic looks. It’s 2-inch display is super sharp, with 240 x 320 pixels and it packs 16GB worth of storage.

You can watch videos (H.264 and MPEG-4 SP), listen to music (supported formats: mp3, WMA, AAC, and WAV), and view photos (JPEG). Podcasts are fully supported and even has a dedicated button. The best thing for UK users is that this Walkman has support for BBC iPlayer downloads. For those of us who cannot get by without tuning in to BBC, this feature is a must. It just might make the S639F the iPod Nano killer that some have been waiting for.

By the way, expect to part with £129 to get your hands on this baby.
