The Mili Pro iPhone Projector is the sort of gadget that doesn’t come to fruition very often as it is sheer genius!  I can’t believe I ever lived without one.  Not only does it look fantastic but is amazingly useful.  Imagine being able to project your videos, photos or whatever you’ve got on your iPhone anywhere that has a big enough wall.

It works with both the iPhone and iPod and lets you turn them in to your own portable cinema.  Wherever you have your phone you can relax and watch a movie on any suitable wall.  There are some nice integrated speakers and even a remote control to adjust the whole thing with. You can either opt for good old wall socket power or charge it up via USB, which will give you 1.5 hours of viewing time.

The focus is fully adjustable and it will even charge your iPhone or iPod when you’re using it and you can connect other external video devices like a PC, Laptop (perfect for presentations), DVD player or VCR thanks to the AV in/out connection.

If you love movies then this is an essential gadget for any iPhone owner.  Click here for a full list of features >>

The MiLi is a rechargeable (via USB) external battery concealed inside a svelte protective hard-shell case. It offers twice – yes twice – the battery life of the iPhone alone; that’s up to 390 hours standby time.

Crafted in über tough plastic, the snug fitting MiLi has all the trimmings you’d expect to find in a top end charger / case and even several ingenious features. The clever design means you can sync your iPhone with iTunes and charge it via USB while it’s still inside the MiLi.

This sleek yet practically designed accessory is also capable of charging other USB-friendly devices. Simply plug your gadgets into the MiLi’s ‘out’ socket and let its 2000mAh lithium polymer battery do the rest. It can even charge two iPhones at the same time.

The MiLi continues to be cutting edge in other areas too: an integrated LED displays charge status, while smart jiggery-pokery instructs the iPhone to always drain the MiLi’s battery first, so if you do remove your iPhone its battery won’t be sapped.
What’s more, once you plug your MiLi-clad iPhone into a USB socket both gizmos will be charged simultaneously – perfect!

CoPilot Live App – Satnav on the iPhone

copilot live iphone appThe iPhone already has a satnav app available in Europe, but if you have ever taken the time to read customer reviews i’m sure you were persuaded not to part with your cash.

The CoPilot Live app was released this week and first glimpses seem promising.  It doesn’t just look super functional but pretty stylish too.  The turn by turn navigation looks and sounds great, 3D views are  handsome and the best part is it’s £26 price.
All the features you’d expect are supplied: 3D views, search by address and intelligent navigation to get you in the right lane at road junctions.
We are impressed with the integration of the iPhone’s unique touches with the traditional windscreen satnav that makes driving a joy.  Extra touches include an automatic night mode, flicking the iPhone’s screen into high contrast when the light gets dim outside, on-screen road signs that exactly match their real-life counterparts and LiveLink location sharing, so you can track your buddies’ position on screen too.
CoPilot is also promising a free update soon to add safety camera alerts, a smarter walking mode and clever call handling to let the app remember your destination after a call.
In our books, the CoPilot Live iPhone app is the first application to truly supply satnav on the iPhone and with and with the cheapest prices known to man we think it’ll be a massive hit!

Spotify, Your iPhone App has ruined my life and kidnapped my kids

Spotify ruined my lifeWe revealed this week that the Spotify iPhone App has just been submitted to iTunes and is being considered for general release, but it seems this process has taken too long for iPhone addict Steven Ramsey, from Scotland.

Single father Ramsey has claimed that the delay in getting the Spotify App to the market has resulted in a series of unfortunate events that started with him filing for bankruptcy having spent all his money on music.  With no money left to pay for daily necessities his local government were forced to remove his three children from their family home and place them in foster care, or in his own words “kidnap” them.

“Music is my major passion in life and I can’t get enough of it.  On a good day I was buying at least 20 albums from iTunes and all the money I was spending became too much to cope with.  I wasn’t able to pay my mortgage for 4 months, and Susan, Anthony and Jason were suffering as a result” claimed Ramsey.

Since Spotify launched in 2006 it rapidly developed in to the entity it is today, and the iPhone app was the next progression of this.  It would give app users access to free (almost!) music and this is the feature Ramsey claims could have stopped his children being taken in to custody.

Based in Edinburgh, the Ramsey family had enough money to cope until ‘iPhone Music Addiction’ struck.  A professional Psychologist commented “multimedia addiction has become more popular in recent years, but an inability to prioritise his children above Roxy Music and Take That is certainly a new one on me thank god”.

Ramsey lamented his point by saying “I know it was no-ones fault but mine, but why has it taken so long for Spotify to get this app released.  My children could have still been with me.  Now I can barely afford to pay for food, let alone music”.

iPhone App Sale – Save Money with AppSniper

AppSniper iPhone AppIf you are the sort of thrify individual that likes to find a good bargain then the iPhone Application AppSniper could be for you.  Why pay that full 59p for and app when you could bag it with money off….obviously this last part is tongue-in-cheek sarcasm but in all seriousness AppSniper is pretty awesome.

It allows you to track which apps are on sale at a given time, and lets you register which apps you’re interested in and then notifies you when the price drops.  According to the developer of AppSniper “us developers often lower the price of apps randomly and for a very short period, sometimes only days or hours, and AppSniper guarantees that you never miss a quality bargain”.

We think this app will pay for itself pretty quickly, and as it stands costs £0.59 here.

The Spotify iPhone app is the end of iTunes

    July 27, 2009 by admin

Spotify iPhone appYou have to be a tech newbie to have missed the fuss about Spotify, and the iPhone app has been tipped to revolutionise music on the go.  With free(ish) music at your fingertips by the barrel-load why would you need to pay premium for an album or track on iTunes?

This is the conundrum that has left tech journalists fussing over whether iTunes will actually allow Spotify to be included on the list of iPhone apps within iTunes, or even be used on the iPhone at all!  But it seems that the Spotify app is pretty much here and some insider information has revelealed that Apple has actually given it the go ahead.

    Will Spotify kill iTunes?

A really great feature of the Spotify app is that it has been designed to work over 3G allowing you to stream music in wifi free zones.  It doesn’t look so good for iTunes when you can’t even download an album without wifi let alone listen to it.

The Spotify app also syncs with the desktop version in real time meaning that when you build playslists on the go they will be ready and waiting to be played on your computer desktop.  It also cache s playlists so you can still listen to music even while offline. However, you can switch to Offline Mode even if your iPhone actually has a web connection. Spotify says it’ll let people without unlimited data tariffs cache up songs while at home, then head out the door and continue listening without impacting their mobile bill. All you need to do is tell the Spotify iPhone app which playlists you want to be available offline.

The first piece of shining light for iTunes is that Spotify currently can’t release it to America as they are limited to countries that already have the desktop version. …this onbiously rules out a massive market (for the time being atleast).

You also need to be a premium Spotify member to gain full access to the app.

So, maybe iTunes and the Apple brand carry enough weight to avoid being ruled out of the portable MP3 market for the time being.  However, you just need to keep an eye on how rapid the Spotify snowball is rolling down that hill to know that when it reaches the bottom there is going to be a bang!

Want to buy a new iPhone 3G S? Recycle your old one first

    iphone 3gs

Yay, a new Apple iPhone is being released this month. The iPhone 3G S doesn’t just cut down on the annoying idiosyncracies of the original phones……no camera zoom, no cut and paste…….. but it also has a host of new features bundled together with an even faster phone (twice as fast according to Apple).

Ok, so we have established that this new iPhone is so ’super-duper’ that everyone in the world must go and buy it, and that existing iPhone 2G and 3G owners must offload their own handset to someone else in order to upgrade.

If you want to minimise the amount of cash you ‘pee down the toilet’ when upgrading have you thought about recycling your old one? If I decide to upgrade then i will try and recycle it online with Mobile Phone Recycling and compare their prices to make as much money as possible when selling my iPhone. Depending on the model you have you can make as much as £210 just by filling out a form and posting it off.

Since announcing the new iPhone 3G S the Twitter-sphere has been alive with people wanting to sell their old one or find interesting uses for them. What is best, using your old phone as a permanent remote for your Mac, or just trading it in for cash?

Apple iPhone Rumour: an OLED iPhone

    March 23, 2009 by robotics

    iphone3g.jpg

I recently blogged about the new iPhone Version 3.0 OS update for Apple’s vaunted Jesus phone, the £621.57 iPhone. The new update finally addressed the issues and missing features that iPhone users felt a phone should have as standard features in any new phone, namely, the ability to send MMS and copy and paste functions. Apple did admirably well in finally addressing customer requests and complaints and has turned the iPhone into a more complete smartphone now.

But the iPhone looks like it is still headed towards more improvements for its coming iterations and the changes are going to be more than just skin deep. There are rumours circulating that the next version of the iPhone that may be released this year will sport an OLED screen. The apparent source of the rumour is actually someone from Korean electronics manufacturer LG.
According to the source, Apple contacted LG to talk about the latter becoming a supplier of OLEDs of various sizes and one of these sizes is measured exactly towards the new upcoming iPhone.

Even though Apple has issued a statement before that it will not be moving to OLED for the next iPhone, smart money is on Apple actually using the new screen technology because OLEDs do not require a backlight for displaying images or videos on the screen. This will definitely improve battery life. And since OLEDs are also thinner and do not require a backlight source, not to mention having better picture quality – it really shows how crucial it is for Apple to go for OLEDs.

iPhone version 3 addresses common iPhone complaints

When the iPhone – the unlocked version now sells for approximately £450.00 at Amazon.co.uk – was first released, it really wowed the mobile phone buying public. The touchscreen was quite awesome, and the many apps that you can put on the phone made it very useful and quite versatile. At that point the term “Jesus phone” was bannered about. Unfortunately, after the initial thrill of the romance, criticisms began to emerge. Why is there no MMS? Why can’t users cut and paste? These are quite significant oversights for what is truly a versatile phone.

Fortunately, third time’s the charm for Apple. The version 3.0 update for the iPhone has finally managed to address these issues and more.

First of all, the MMS and cut and paste niggles have been finally addressed. Users can now send MMS and cut and paste is an easy task to do. Of course there are other additional new features for the new update. First, there is now actual A2DP stereo Bluetooth functionality, which means you can now use Bluetooth headphones and pair it with the iPhone for truly wireless entertainment. The long awaited push functionality that has been promised by Apple is now available (but apps will not run in the background). There is also an auto login function for WiFi hotspots to make surfing faster.

Memo freaks will appreciate the new Voice Memos app that will allow users to record notes and reminders. When viewing Mail, Text or notes, you can now choose a Landscape view. There is also an included phishing protection to protect you while surfing.

The developer beta of OS 3.0 is now available and the full free update will be made available to all iPhone users this summer. A caveat though, iTouch users will have to pay for the update and 1st gen iPhone owners will not get the A2DP and MMS functionalities because of the limitations of the hardware.

Hit iPhone App Made By 9-Year-Old

    shapeimage_3.jpg

One of the best things about the iPhone is the slew of third party applications that are available for download. Indeed, this is one main reason that a lot of people want to get their hands on this phone, despite its many lacking features as a mobile phone. But did you ever think that a kid – a 9-year-old at that – would be able to create a working iPhone app, much less one that would become a hit?

Well this little Malaysian boy from Singapore has done just that! Lim Ding Wen is a prodigy in senses of the word. He first used the computer when he was a mere 2-year-old boy. By the time he was 7, he was already programming. And now, two years later, he has about 20 programming projects to his name!

His latest – and most popular by far – is the iPhone app called Doodle Kids. This application allows users to draw pictures on the iPhone using one’s fingers; much like finger painting. In order to clear the drawing, one only has to shake the iPhone. The concept seems simple enough and seems to be directed towards kids. In fact, he created this app for his little sisters who, according to the boy, love to draw. I think that while becoming famous was not his intent when creating the program, the boy is quite delighted to have had over 4,000 downloads in less than 2 weeks!

His father, who is a chief technology officer at a local firm, is quite proud of his child’s achievements but remains grounded at the same time. Oh, and Lim’s newest project? A sci-fi game for the iPhone. Can’t wait to see how this one fares!

A different iPhone gaming experience with the iControlPad

    icontrolpad.jpg

If you’re one of the Apple fanatics who eagerly anticipate Steve Jobs’ keynote addresses in different events all year round then you will probably have heard of Jobs talking about the iPhone/iTouch combo as a separate platform that Apple, Inc. wants to promote to users.

One way of promoting the iPhone is by actually marketing it as a viable gaming console and not just a phone. There is some weight to this because there is a growing number of games that are being programmed for the iPhone and they can be quite fun especially with its unique control scheme. But gaming as a total experience is a hit and miss affair, generally speaking. It is good in that games are steadily being developed and they are really good games. The downside is that gaming on the iPhone or iTouch leaves you with a fingerprint besmudged surface that is just completely ugly to look at.

If you’re the type who make gaming on the iPhone a regular habit then you
should consider getting the iControlPad (http://www.icontrolpad.com/).

The iControlPad is a gaming accessory for the iPhone that augments the controls for the gadget. It basically gives it a real directional pad and accompanying action buttons. Assembly is quite simple (a no brainer, really).

All you need to do is to insert your iPhone inside the accessory and voila! Game like you would.

The iControlPad is still being produced and according to the company, it will become available very soon. With a price pegged at £30. I think it’s a fair trade off for actual tactile and conventional gaming like we’re used to.

Juice Pack MiLi Keeps Your iPhone Going

    January 16, 2009 by budda

    mili-battery-pack2.jpg

Juice Packs new MiLi battery add-on for the iPhone gives users always on the go an extra 8 hours boost before charging. We’ve given it the reality check and weren’t disappointed with the results.

The last iPhone battery we reviewed left us a little sickened by the bulky ugly look whilst attached to the sleek iPhone, I don’t think it could get much worse.

The product arrives in a tidy black box with the performance specs on the back. Opening up the box we find the MiLi battery and a 3D cardboard cut out iPhone 3G inside (you can give that to the kids to play with).

The MiLi is a hard plastic battery pack that covers the back of the iPhone and extends the length of the handset. When the iPhone is inserted it adds thickness to the phone which can be a pocket packer unless you’re in baggy jeans. On one hand the added thickness improves grip of the device when in use (at least for my hands), but at the same time it removes the beauty of the device.

The case is finished in gloss black or white, with a choice of colours for the slot inside. Once your iPhone is slotted in the colour doesn’t really show so the choice of colour for personalisation seems a little pointless.

The back of the MiLi features the branding, and covers up the Apple logo. A small cut out in the case ensures the camera isn’t obstructed – a nice bit of attention to detail.

The bottom front of the MiLi features 4 blue LED lights indicating the remaining power in the battery. A power button in the middle can be clicked to light up the LEDs for a short period in order to check the battery level. During normal use the case remains black (or white) and blends in well with the handset.

The base of the MiLi features two USB ports market ‘IN’ and ‘OUT’. The input is how the MiLi is charged, via the supplied USB cable, from any computer.

Unusually for iPhone/iPod accessories is that the standard Apple cable supplied with the device isn’t used – meaning you not have extra cables going to waste. However the reduced size of the mini USB input leaves space for a handy extra feature.

    mili_juice_headset.jpg

The ‘OUT’ socket is a full size USB port providing power from the MiLi battery to charge another device such as a bluetooth headset. This is a great addition, as I often leave my bluetooth headset in the car for weeks and neglect to keep it charged up whilst at home.

Stats on the packaging are all very impressive, but as iPhone 3G users found, Apples stats don’t always match the real world! With our 3G handset I left the wireless connected, bluetooth on, push email on, and IMAP mail collecting every 15 minutes, and browsed the net and Facebook a considerable number of times. The iPhone’s iPod functionality also got some usage for a couple of hours too.

So from a full iPhone battery and full MiLi battery I managed to keep the iPhone 3G away from a power socket for 27 hours. iPhone 2G users will get even better lifespan too.

Speaking of 2G iPhones, a good selling feature of the MiLi is its multi compatibility. Unlike other cases and batteries, the MiLi works with the iPhone 2G and 3G, meaning you can upgrade to an iPhone 3G when your contract ends, and still keep using the battery.

    The Bad

    • Doesn’t use Apple connector for charging.
    • Bit thick for carrying in the pocket.
    • Glossy exterior might assist in making the device slip out of your hand.
    • Prevents most protective cases from being usable.

    The Good

    • Additional USB output for powering other devices.
    • Great design and colour matching the iPhone 3G.
    • Impressive battery life when maxing out iPhone usage
    • Can be charged from any USB port
    • Compatible with 2G and 3G handsets.

The MiLi is available now in a choice of six colours from JuicePack.co.uk for £44.

Palm Pre: Still Want An iPhone?

    palm_pre_2.jpg

We have to admit that the iPhone, in spite of all the hype surrounding it, has some flaws. It is one cool gadget but it is far from perfect. Still, most everyone wants one, right?

Think again…with the introduction of the Palm Pre into the picture, the playing field might be changing ever so slightly. Palm was one of the big players which had a major announcement during the recently concluded Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and boy, was their announcement big! The Palm Pre is not your usual run-of-the-mill PDA. And despite the fact that Palm has broken some hearts in the past, it seems that the Pre is set to make a strong impact in the market this time.

So what makes the Pre special? There are so many little details that will make gadget lovers all over the world drool in anticipation but perhaps the best things about the Pre are the user interface and the operating system. One highlight is the Deck of Cards feature, which allows users to switch between applications without having to close a single one – much like what you normally do on your PC using Windows. Another feature, dubbed Synergy, allows users to integrate ALL contacts in one single place. This makes things so much simpler!

How about the physical design? The touch screen is 3.1 inches and has half-VGA resolution – that’s 320 x 480. It has a full QWERTY keyboard, which slides out from the underside, which has ample space in between buttons, making it very easy to use.

There is so much more about the Pre that would make you think twice about wanting an iPhone! And if you’re from the UK, you just might be able to get your hands on one later on this year. For now, let’s see how it fares in the US market.

Turn Your iPod Touch Into An iPhone

I am a bit behind in the game. A year or so has passed (I think) since the iPhone hit the stores. To date, I still have not gotten my hands on one. Oh I have played with this baby lovingly but I don’t have one to call my own. I was actually thinking of getting myself the iPhone as a Christmas present. I have had my doubts, to be honest. I have a perfectly good phone and I don’t need a new one. But hey, it’s an iPhone! End of the discussion.

Then I heard of a freeware application that can turn an iPod Touch into a lean mean calling machine. Yep, you read that right. The iPod Touch, which basically does everything that the iPhone does – except for the phone part – can soon be used to make phone calls via VOIP.

This is what Truphone is currently working on. According to Geraldine Wilson, the CEO of Truphone, they are going to roll out a “slew of new features for the iPod Touch that will let users call landlines, Skype users or send instant messages. We’re talking weeks, not months, before these go live.” Can you see the big smile breaking out on my face? Can you feel my heart pounding with excitement?

The iPod Touch is cheaper by far than the iPhone. I won’t be saddled with lock in periods with a mobile carrier. True, it still won’t be an iPhone BUT it is an iPod Touch and that counts for something, doesn’t it?

iPhone Too Fast for the UK

    asaLogo.gif

Those smooth flowing TV ads for Apple’s iPhone 3G are just lies, lies, lies! At least that’s what the UK advertising standards agency thought.

In an announcement yesterday, the iPhone 3G TV advert has been banned from UK TV due to claims that the device is fast, really fast.

Seventeen viewers complained that the ad was misleading, because they believed it exaggerated the speed of the iPhone 3G. Maybe they live out in the country?

All of the tasks “had waiting times of only a fraction of a second,” the ASA said in a statement. A voice over says no less than five times that the 3G iPhone is “really fast.”

In response, Apple told the ASA that the claim is a comparison between the 3G and 2G iPhone models, and that users would understand that performance could vary. The ad did include a text disclaimer that read “Network performance will vary by location.”

Apple haven’t commented on the ruling, but you wont be seeing any more iPhone 3G ads for a while.

iPhone 2.2 firmware released – Insert obligatory cut and paste remark here

    iphone22.jpg

The latest version of firmware for the Apple iPhone was released today. The 246 meg download brings with it a host of new features for the iPhone, many of them for Google Maps. It wouldn’t be an iphone update blog without an obligatory to mention to cut and paste (which still isn’t there neither is MMS)

Most of the updates seem to relate to Google maps specifically street view, timetables, walking directions and the ability to share current location via email.

Probably the most useful addition is that of direct downloading of podcasts from within iTunes (over Wi-Fi and cellular network) There’s also various bug fixes including a “decrease in call setup failures and dropped calls” which is always welcome, it’s nice to have a phone that can actually make calls reliably!

There’s also the preference to turn on/off auto-correction in keyboard settings if you are finding the iphone isn’t liking your lol speak/slang/foul language :)

Lastly on the list is “Pressing Home button from any Home screen displays the first Home screen” which hardly warrants a list in an update, big f’in deal (and before you fanboys chime in yes I do have an iphone!

2.1 was around 238meg so there’s only an extra 8meg worth of bloat this time. The iPhone Dev Team has cautioned jailbreakers to hold off on updating for the moment.

A2DP for your iPhone and iPod

    bluetoothiphonead2p.jpg

RXS: Redshift has launched two brand new adapters which add Bluetooth functionality to phones and music devices.

The interesting one allows you to stream your favourite tunes from your iPhone (or iPod) through virtually any Bluetooth accessory including speakers, headphones and car stereos. The Bluetooth iPod/iPhone Adaptor enables Bluetooth connectivity for the iPod and iPhone.

    • The Bluetooth iPod/iPhone Adaptor supports A2DP and AVRCP profiles. This means that you can stream music from your Apple device to your Bluetooth accessory. It also adds a remote control functionality so you can play, pause and skip tracks using your speakers or headphones.
    • You can also connect to Bluetooth car stereos. Gadgets such as the iTrip rely on FM frequencies to broadcast music from your iPod and play it though your car stereo speakers. With the Bluetooth iPod/iPhone Adaptor you no longer have to rely on FM signals or suffer interference when listening to your iPod whilst driving.
    • The Bluetooth iPod/iPhone Adaptor weighs just 4.5g, measures 43.5 x 15 x 6.6mm and sits neatly against your device. (This kit may be tiny but it has big advantages!)

Finding yourself using your iPhone to do more and more of your out-of-office work? The touch screen keyboard of the iPhone is good, but will slow you down…

I knock out loads of emails with the iPhone touch screen keyboard, but tend to get sick of typing long essay emails with single fingers.

For people on the move who don’t fancy dragging a laptop with them – the BTKeyMini could be the answer.

It’s a bluetooth keyboard designed specifically for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch, and comes complete with clicky keys!

Unlike rubber roll-up keyboards, the BTKeyMini is solid and not exactly compact for fold up.

Available for pre-order since August, the BTKeyMini should be available soon for approx $92 (£61.38 at the current exchange rate)
