Sony to release OLED Walkman?

If we really are to believe all that Apple marketing, the future of gadgets really does lie on a touch interface. We’ve seen it with the iPhone and iTouch and other manufacturers like LG and Samsung are already following suit with their own touch interface mobile phones.
Sony is definitely buying into the hype of touch gadgets. There are rumours that the electronics giant will be showing off a new Walkman at the Consumer Electronics Expo 2009. The big feature here is that the Walkman will sport an OLED touchscreen display.
At this point, this is more just speculation especially in light of Sony’s pronouncement that it will only manufacture OLED panels for TV applications and not for portable devices. Optimists though say that it shouldn’t stop Sony from acquiring the small OLED panels from other manufacturers like Samsung (something Sony has already been doing with its flatscreen TVs).
Based on supposed insider information, the OLED Walkman will be available in both 16gb and 32gb variants. It will also have built-in WiFi. Of course, the real star here is the display. The 3-inch OLED panel will have contrast ratio of 10,000:1 and a WQVGA resolution. The new Walkman will also have a dedicated Youtube link. It will also have a digital amplifier as well as an FM radio.
We’ll keep you posted about this possible new product in the next few weeks.
