PS3 Phone Home

As part of his keynote speech Sony Computer Entertainment’ Phil Harrison has officially opened the doors on Home for PS3. This unique avatar-based real-time virtual community will enter a large scale beta trial in April and the service itself is scheduled to launch this Autumn.
So what exactly is home? Anyone familiar with massive multiplayer online RPG’s (think Everquest & World Of Warcraft) will aready have a basic understanding of the underlying idea.
You start by creating your virtual representation of yourself. There will be facial and body customisation options. You’ll also be able to unlock premium accessories, clothing and other content for your avatar by purchasing PS3 games.
So every character walking around the environment is the representation of another player/PS3 owner.
You’ll be able to use shortcuts for quick chat, you could type via USB keyboard, or best of all voice chat. The world map is also filled with all sorts of embedded HD quality video, in-game dynamic ads, playable pool tables and bowling, and even embedded arcade machines that will allow for more arcade titles to be downloaded to them.
Where Home gets even more interesting is in the private spaces. Every PS3 owner using Home will get an apartment, which can be customized with just about any media you have stored on your HDD.
So imagine your PS3 buddies all hanging out at you virtual apartment utilising it for media sharing or simply to plan/launch online gaming scenarios.
It appears Sony could really be onto a winner with this Home concept and I would expect the facilities contained within it to grow in line with user volume.

I hope one day, PS3 virtual community will become as popular as world of warcraft. The idea is great and I would like to be a part of it however i do not have a Sony PS3 yet
I think sony got a winner with this one, although its kida hard to compare it to such a game as world of warcraft but still, great stuff.
